Police Charge Second Person In Deadly October Crash

CMPD now says the man originally identified as a passenger was actually the driver in a deadly October crash.

34-year-old Rajahn Baskerville turned himself in to police Wednesday, officials say, after warrants for his arrest were issued on May 8th. Investigators say evidence showed Baskerville was actually operating the Chevrolet Silverado that crashed into another driver, resulting in that driver’s death on October 30th.

Police originally identified and charged Kianna Cockfield as the truck’s driver. She was charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Careless & Reckless Driving, and Speeding.

Baskerville is now charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Careless & Reckless Driving, and Speeding (78 in a 45 zone).

Officials have not said how this will impact Cockfield.

The investigation is ongoing.

Update on November 3, 2017

Police say after further investigation, it appears a road rage incident took place prior to the vehicle crash.  The road rage incident started on I-77 and proceeded onto Freedom Drive until the location of the crash, according to a news release.

Detectives say they are currently looking to identify a newer model grey Toyota Camry that was driven by a black male.  Police do not believe the vehicle will have any damage.

Anyone that was in the area of Freedom Drive and Alleghany Street that has information about this vehicle or the driver is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

CHARLOTTE, NC — CMPD says the outbound lanes of Freedom Drive at Alleghany Street are currently closed due to a fatal accident.

Officials say two vehicles collided around 9:30pm. One of the vehicles also hit a power pole causing several power lines to fall in the area.

The driver of a Chevrolet Silverado, identified as Kianna Yanee Cockfield, was traveling northwest on Freedom Drive from Morehead Street towards I-85 at a high rate of speed.  As the Chevrolet Silverado approached Alleghany Street the truck struck a Suzuki SX4 operated by Jason Edward Black.

Mr. Black was in the process of making a U-turn on Freedom Drive at Alleghany Street when his vehicle was hit.  As Mr. Black proceeded to make a U-turn to travel northwest on Freedom Drive towards I-85, his vehicle was struck in the passenger side by the white Chevrolet Silverado.

After impact, the Silverado drove off the right side of and struck a utility pole causing the pole to split and power lines to fall. The Suzuki continued out of control and came to rest in the outbound lanes of Freedom Drive.

Mr. Black was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries, according to officials, and was later pronounced dead.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit have charged Mrs. Cockfield with Involuntary Manslaughter, Careless & Reckless Driving, and Speeding. 

She has been arrested and was taken to the Mecklenburg County Intake Center for processing.
